Below are our frequently asked questions. If you have a question that isn’t answered below or you’d just like to get in touch, please email info@plyroom.com.au.

In a world where consumption is the new norm, our aim is to create a sustainable business creating with honesty, transparency and longevity. If we all going to continue buying stuff, let’s try and make stuff that is designed for permanence rather than landfill.

Planned, or built-in obsolescence is the policy of deliberately limiting the life of a product in order to encourage the purchaser to replace it. As consumers we see it everywhere. The sales frenzy for end of season items, the new, ‘improved’ phone that no longer supports the old charging cables. As designers, we take note of the items our grandparents lovingly repaired and reused.

We want you to have furniture that is contemporary and feels current, but we also want you to have our furniture for decades. We want you to know how to take care of it, have it as a blank canvas in your home that can be adorned for the seasons and colour trends of the year. We never want you to feel like it can be put on the kerb or sent to landfill. At best, you love it for decades and pass it down to your children. At worst, you move it on to another family who love it just as much as you did when you feel it no longer serves your needs.

We work with a number of small-scale makers, both in Italy and locally in Melbourne. We only work with smaller workshops running a refined production process. We like to know that our products are made in limited runs by people we know.

We are very hands on with the production of our locally-made items. All our locally-made furniture is a short drive to Plyroom HQ and you will often find us visiting our local makers. Our local makers understand our ethos and work with us to ensure the highest production standards are maintained.

Within the genre of plywood there are many types and species of timber, however we only work with sustainably forested and certified Baltic birch and European beech.

Plywood is our material of choice for several reasons. It is made from real trees. More specifically, thin layers of honest timber pressed and glued to the desired thickness. A board of solid wood is dimensionally unstable and may shrink or swell. Plywood is a board made from thin sheets of construction veneers which are bonded in layers to create a strong and stable board.

A common hardwood species used for plywood production is birch. Birch plywood is classified as one of the most beautiful and high quality types of plywood due to its superior mechanical properties and relatively uniform appearance. The advantage with birch is its fast rate of growth compared to other wood species. We only use sustainably forested and certified birch of the highest standard. We also use beech for the curved storage pieces in our collection. These are made by a family of furniture and percussion makers in Italy who have been fine-tuning their craft for 100 years.

In the production of plywood, each layer of hardwood is pressed and glued in alternating directions. Typically, solid timber wants to bend and warp along its grain direction, so alternating the layers forces the timber to work against itself, making it super strong. This technique is called CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). Glues are also added, and depending on the type of glue, this contributes to the strength of the board once it’s all laid up.

On some of our designs we work with solid timbers and brass to complement our pieces. We never use MDF veneer or chipboard.

1% for the Planet is an organisation that aims to drive true on-the-ground change within their six core issue areas: climate, food, land, pollution, water and wildlife. Through our membership of 1% for the planet, we will donate 1% of our gross revenue (not just profit) directly to highly vetted environmental non-profit organisations to ensure our donations make the most impact possible.

We recently learnt that only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment. Looking for an opportunity to grow sustainability efforts further, we’ve chosen to participate in the creation of a healthier economy and planet for all by becoming a member of 1% for the Planet.

The most you will need to assemble any piece is a hammer and mallet. Some pieces need only be assembled by hand. Any specific tools required for your product will be supplied.

Yes, but please take care when disassembling your furniture as rough handling may lead to chipping or denting of the product.

We have a studio in Northcote, Melbourne. It is open Monday - Thursday 10am - 4pm by appointment. You can make an appointment on our Contact Us page.

Making quality products that will last the test of time is very important to us. Our products are independently tested and certified in accordance with AUS/NZ safety standards for your peace of mind. We use architectural grade European birch plywood which has the same strength kilo for kilo as steel, making it extremely durable and robust. Combining high quality materials with the purposefully considered construction techniques of our designs, you can rest assured knowing your Plyroom piece will be a treasured piece for many years to come.

Due to the natural grain of the wood, there may be a difference between the colour of each piece which makes each furniture item truly unique.

Wood is a natural material that varies in colour, grain and overall appearance and texture. While the product images on the Plyroom website are intended to represent the natural materials used and to display various characteristics of the plywood, they’re not able to show every variation and every individual piece of furniture.

This is particularly true for variations in colour, pattern, texture and veining. Some pieces of plywood may feature a small number of colour-matched patches to ensure colour consistency and prevent knots in the timber. These are designed to give each piece a consistent face.

Care instructions

Clean your furniture by wiping with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Please do not use any abrasives or cleaning products as these can damage the finish. We recommend protecting the furniture item from very hot or wet objects and always wipe spills immediately with a damp or dry cloth. When placing furniture in your space, please be mindful of environmental factors. Avoid placing furniture in areas of strong sunlight, as this may cause the finish to fade and can contribute to structural movement. The use of humidifiers near or on the product may also harm the finish.

Yes. Our furniture is very simple to assemble. We recommend assembling the product on carpet or a soft surface such as the product packaging to prevent scratching. If you would like an additional copy of assembly instructions please email info@plyroom.com.au.

We ensure the quality and durability of our makers’ designs and craftsmanship. Our furniture is not designed to be dragged along floors, unless it includes castors. Always lift and move furniture with care. Environmental conditions can affect the performance and appearance of your furniture.
